BGU-Negev Emergency Fund Update 3

January 8, 2009

Dear Friends,

Sgt. Alexander Mashevitzky
Sgt. Alexander Mashevitzky

Sadly, the threat to the safety of our BGU family has not diminished.

Yesterday, we mourned the passing of Sgt. Alexander Mashevitzky, 21, who was killed in battle. He was the son of Prof. Grigory Mashevitzky of the Department of Mathematics, and a star graduate of BGU’s innovative Kidumatica, a math enrichment program for gifted children of the Negev.

Only one hour after his funeral in Beer-Sheva, two more grad missiles fell too close for comfort and luckily landed in open space. There were no injuries and little damage. Read more>>>

Classes remain canceled indefinitely. Some 2,000 students have been recalled to military service, and the city of 200,000 residents has come to a standstill, as many anxiously await the wails of the next warning siren.

BGU is in crisis and needs our help. AABGU has launched the BGU-Negev Emergency Fund.

We must raise $10 million to support critical needs in campus safety and security; distance learning; counseling and psychological assistance; medical equipment; and community services, such as child care and respite for combat soldiers.

Of utmost importance is the strengthening of security on campus. BGU has already begun to augment the city’s alert system, ensuring that it is heard throughout every corner of BGU’s three Beer-Sheva campuses.

Additional equipment is needed to fight fires and carry out possible rescue operations. Facilities need to be adapted to safeguard flammable and combustible materials in laboratories.

We need to hire and train more security personnel to manage the movement of people and equipment in the event of a direct missile strike.

And we need to provide academic and psychological services to our students, dramatically expanding distance and e-learning opportunities, and access to counselors for those under stress.

We urge you to donate to this fund today so we can provide immediate cash to BGU to protect the students, faculty and staff.

To learn more about how the Emergency Fund will make an immediate impact, check our Web site on a regular basis.

We never imagined that we would be in the business of providing emergency relief and sincerely hope that we are soon back to lauding our accomplishments in providing outstanding education to nearly 18,000 students and making innovate breakthroughs in environmental preservation, high-technology, medicine, science, and more.

In the meanwhile, we thank you for your support and ask that you give as generously as you can during this perilous time and forward this message to your friends and family.

Most sincerely,
