Drexel University President Visits BGU
February 10, 2012
On a recent trip to Israel, Drexel University President John A. Fry visited Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
He was specifically interested in seeing BGU’s Open Apartments Program, and met with several students who participate in the program.
Students in the Open Apartments Program live rent-free in Beer-Sheva’s socioeconomically under-resourced neighborhoods. In exchange they get involved in the local community by offering regular weekly programming.
Students give back to the community in many ways. For example they provide after-school homework help, give music lessons, and hold current events discussion groups for senior citizens.
“President Fry was interested in thinking about how we could adapt it to our Drexel environment, and that was one of the things we talked about with the students,” said Julie Mostov, the vice provost for global initiatives at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
BGU faculty and administration also discussed the potential of collaboration in research and academics with Drexel University, specifically in the areas of tissue engineering, autism and women’s health and community nursing.
