BGU Students Decipher Ancient Text Using AI

The oldest Jewish “siddur” ever found is part of the Green Collection
Jewish News Syndicate – Artificial Intelligence (AI) is going Biblical. Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) students are utilizing AI to decipher ancient Hebrew and Aramaic texts. The University’s engineering students are employing Mask Language Modeling to get to the bottom of damaged, centuries-old inscriptions.
Previously, epigraphists faced challenges in reconstructing missing parts of valuable writings, resorting to time-consuming manual procedures to make out an approximation of the missing content.
BGU’s AI model, called “Embible,” was featured at last month’s meeting of the European Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics.
BGU Prof. Mark Last notes, “We can help historians who have devoted their lives to recreating these ancient texts as accurately as possible. Furthermore, I believe the model can be extended to cover other ancient languages.”
