Frequently Asked Questions

Participation and Registration

Can I participate in just one of the tours?
Absolutely. While we hope everyone will register for both, they are independent.

Kashrut and Shabbat

Is either tour kosher?
Neither tour is kosher. Vegetarian food is available on both tours (by request) and kosher food is available in Tunisia for an additional fee of $350.

Is the kosher option (with the supplemental fee) in Tunisia "airplane" style food or local kosher food?
The kosher food is prepared by the Rabbi from La Goulette. So, it is home cooked and absolutely kosher by the highest standards. The tour operator would have the hotel keep it refrigerated/frozen and would serve it along with plastic utensils and plates, if that is required.

Is Beit Mordechai (La Goulette Synagogue) where the group will attend services on Friday night within walking distance of Les Residence, the hotel where we will stay on Friday night?
No. An option would be to stay for Friday night at a hotel in the La Goulette neighborhood, from where one can then walk to the synagogue on both Friday night and Saturday morning. The rabbi, who is a friend of the tour operator, would almost certainly invite people to his house. There is a La Goulette hotel that is a 3-star, rather simple, but perfectly clean, overlooking the sea. Many local Jews who live away from the synagogue, stay there on the High Holidays so they do not have to drive.

For those that don’t travel on Shabbat, are there places for them to stroll to and visit on Saturday afternoon near Les Residence while the group is off touring?
The hotel is on the seaside. In that area, other than walking near some of the other hotels in the area, there is not any variety within walking. Again, however, in La Goulette, there is character and places to walk. One can also stay at a hotel in the heart of the city and walk to the Grand Synagogue. However, the feeling at La Goulette is much warmer, much more haimsha.
